CrossWalk In-person Reopening Plan for August 2020

I am excited to announce that CrossWalk Church will gradually be restarting in-person worship in the month of August. Our online option will continue as a “new normal”, so if you are in a risk category or simply not ready to come back to worship in person, don’t worry! This option will continue to be available.

A phased-in approach to worship.

We will approach in-person worship as if we were starting over with our services. Please note that we plan to gradually open over a period of a few weeks. We want to make sure that we can offer a safe environment. And because we have no timetable for getting back to the public schools we rent, we will worship at Arizona Lutheran Academy.

Here is the plan:

August 2, 2020 – one service will be offered at 9 am at Arizona Lutheran Academy. We will allow a maximum for 50 worshippers at this service who will register in advance. This will allow our teams to begin functioning and to understand the new set-up and sanitary standards we choose to have at our worship services.

August 9, 2020 – two services will be offered at Arizona Lutheran Academy. One service will be offered at 9 am for up to 50 worshipers and a second service at 11 am for up to 50 worshippers. Worshippers will need to register in advance. This will allow us to get an understanding of what is involved in keeping two services sanitized.

August 16, 2020 – We will offer two services, one at 9 am and one at 11 am. We do not know if we will need to put size limits on these services. We will wait to hear from state and local officials for suggested gathering sizes before we make this decision. We are hoping that we will not need to follow any size restrictions and that there will not be a need to register. As soon as we have this information, it will be posted on our website.

August 23, 2020 into the future – We are expecting that Covid 19 will not be going away in the near future. We plan to continue offering in-person options that we believe are safe and in line with state and local health mandates. Please continue to look at the news page of our website for the most up to date information.

CrossWalk Kids and Youth:

We will not be offering an in-person CrossWalk Kids or Youth worship option in the month of August. Instead, we will continue to produce online videos and materials for families to use. In addition, parents are asked to sign up for a CWLK Kids packet for each of their children that will provide lessons and crafts for the whole family to enjoy.

We do not expect that CrossWalk Kids will completely open before public grade schools are back in session. We simply do not believe that we are able to offer an environment that meets the CrossWalk standard of being safe and sanitary at this time. Parents are welcome to bring their children to the regular worship service, and we are considering different environments and resources for families to use during the service.

Youth are encouraged to look for Impact Group options for the fall. This will allow them to stay connected to Jesus and each other during this time. Contact Phil Bischoff at if you are a parent who would like to lead a group or if you have questions about Impact Groups for youth.

What should I expect at worship services in August?

We will follow local mandates: The state and local government have pages of suggested guidelines for worship institutions and the general population to follow when meeting. We will do our best to follow these guidelines. Here are just a few you can expect:

  • Physical distancing of 6ft from those outside of your family.

  • Available hand sanitizer.

  • Masks required and worn throughout the service.

  • Limited singing and congregational speaking.

  • Limited attendance of 50 people

  • We ask those feeling sick to stay home.

  • Warning for those in risk categories.

We will exceed some safety guidelines. Our mantra for worship reopening is that we want people to be “saved and safe”. We understand that churches are exempt from certain state and city mandates. Even though this is true, we will do our best to go above and beyond what is required in order to keep our people as safe as possible.

We will depend on our volunteers to return. CrossWalk always has and always will depend on volunteers. If you plan to return for worship, please plan to serve. If you desire to serve and you don’t know where to start, send an email to and we will contact you with options for service!

Humility, communication, flexibility and respect. We know that there are many ways that a reopening of a church could take place. But we ask that everyone in the CrossWalk family has the humility to admit that we don’t have all the answers. We ask that if something is unclear that you communicate with us and we will do our best to communicate with you. We ask for flexibility as our plans will very likely change at some point. And finally, we ask a mutual love and respect for each other and differing points of view that your brothers and sisters in Christ have about how to move forward.

We are about to turn the dial on reopening in-person worship at CrossWalk Church. And whether you are someone who is ready to come back for one of the first services or someone who won’t be able to come back for a while, we ask for your prayers and partnership in sharing the good news of Jesus. We will continue to work together to share the gospel and we are thankful that you are joining the CrossWalk family in doing it.
